One of my favorite songs is Jonathan Richman's Hospital. In the song the narrator walks down a street where his ex-lover lives and finds he has tears in his eyes. Gives You Hell seems to present the viewpoint of the ex-lover, who hopes that when his ex walks down the street, she feels nothing but pain, like in the original version of The Little Mermaid where if she drinks a potion to become human, it will feel like she is walking on knives for the rest of her life. Of course, the All American Rejects add a chorus of fratboys and it all ends up sounding like it is trying to hard to become an anthem for freshmen across the country. The best anthem is the song that becomes one over time, not the one that is created to be one. We Are The World is a terrible anthem, Common People is a grand one.
